Group: Pakistan Floods Just the Beginning for Massive Natural Disasters

According to Refugees International, floods like the ones that devastate Pakistan are just a taste of what's to come.

November 24, 2010 /Natural Resources PR News/ -- According to Refugees International, floods like the ones that devastate Pakistan are just a taste of what's to come.

In its new report, the group says climate change is leading to a growing number of natural disasters. It estimates that nearly 200 million people will be displaced by natural disasters and climate change by the year 2050, and that world's poorest regions will be the most impacted.

The president of Refugees International, Dan Glickman, referred to the major floods in Pakistan as a wake-up call to the threats of climate change. He urges governments to plan now for natural disasters and the displacement they cause.

The summer floods in Pakistan put one-fifth of the country under water and affected more than 20 million people. The damage was especially extensive since the disaster caught the government by surprise, and it was unable to respond timely and effectively.
