IREM's May Meeting to Feature Green Professional Fred Dean of West Village

Founding member of Triangle real estate organization to discuss environmental stewardship and responsibility to industry professionals

RALEIGH, NC, May 14, 2009 /Natural Resources PR News/ -- The Greater Raleigh-Durham Chapter 105 of the Institute of Real Estate Management's (IREM) May meeting will feature speaker Fred Dean, CPM, CGP, Regional Property Manager of West Village who will present "A Tour of West Village's Environmentally-Friendly Features". The meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at West Village Apartments located at 604 W. Morgan Street in Durham. The meeting begins at 5:00PM with a tour of West Village to follow.

In his role, Dean works with clients of Drucker and Falk (a real estate services firm) that are building apartments and need information on green living. He has been with West Village for eight years and is a Certified Green Professional (CGP), as designated by The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Dean says that he is the "green voice" for his firm and looks forward to the opportunity to speak to IREM members on a subject that is such a large part of his professional and personal life.

"Historic preservation is the ultimate form of recycling," says Dean. "At West Village, we believe that our social and environmental responsibility should go a few steps further. That is why our community has been designed to limit its impact on the environment and ensure long-term sustainability."

West Village has 453 urban loft apartments and 250,000 square feet of commercial and retail space in the heart of Downtown Durham. With grants from the City of Durham and the Cleanwater Trust Fund, the property features approximately 5,000 square feet of green roof area and storm water treatment systems that include bioretention gardens vegetative filtration systems. These include cisterns that collect and recycle rainwater through courtyard landscapes and fountains. Certified bamboo and recycled antique pine floors limit impact on natural forests.

Dean says that thinking "proactively and progressively" is the future and it is everyone's responsibility to be good stewards of the earth. "As property managers, there are products, amenities, and services that we can provide that fit the green need in our professional lives," adds Dean. "Although the cost of many items is cost-prohibitive in rental spaces, there are many products and work starting at the construction site that fit the green need."
